Roof carpentry is the process of constructing and installing a roof frame, or sheathing. It can be done using either a framed structure or a premade truss system, depending on the type of building. A good roof requires accurate measurements and precise construction. A roofer needs to be physically fit and comfortable working in all weather conditions. They must also be able to work well with numbers and use various tools and gauges.
Start by laying the underlayment. This layer is used to protect the sheathing from moisture and other damage. It’s typically made of tar paper, but felt is also used. The underlayment is then covered by a layer of shingle, and then the sheathing.
Next, install the end trusses. These jut out in a perpendicular fashion toward the front of the building and serve as temporary bracing until you can install a more permanent support. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding their placement and affixing.
Now that the end trusses are in place, you can start on the standard trusses. Measure and mark the seat cuts on the ends of each diagonal rafter chord, leaving at least a foot or two of length on the end of each to account for the ridge board overhang. Line up the long arm of your framing square against the plumb cut on one side, then against the heel cut on the other.
