What Happens at the IVF Clinic

IVF Clinic provides in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other fertility treatment services. The team includes gynecologists, nurses and embryologists who specialize in infertility and assisted reproductive technology. They also offer tubal reversal surgery and intrauterine insemination (IUI).

A typical IVF cycle starts with hormone medicines to spur the development of multiple eggs, instead of just one egg in a natural cycle. The amount and type of medications prescribed is based on your medical history, age, AMH level and response to ovarian stimulation during previous IVF cycles.

When the follicles grow to the right size, they’re retrieved noninvasively through your vagina during an operation called oocyte retrieval. The doctor uses ultrasound images to guide a long needle into the sacs that contain your eggs, called follicles. The procedure is usually painless and takes less than 30 minutes under sedation.

Once the eggs are retrieved, they’re combined with sperm in a lab to form embryos. Embryos that show the greatest potential for success are transferred into your uterus about a week later (this is known as embryo transfer). Depending on the circumstances, you may have extra embryos that can be frozen for future use.

A few days after embryo transfer, you’ll have a blood test to check for pregnancy. The test measures hCG, a pregnancy hormone. It can take up to 14 days to get a positive result. Most IVF treatments require a few cycles of treatment to achieve a pregnancy.
